Vinik’s offer of an acre of land to the university was made public Wednesday afternoon at a Board of Trustees health workgroup meeting, USF spokesman Adam Freeman said.
Vinik’s spokesman declined comment Wednesday.
“USF’s Board of Trustees must first decide if the new facilities will be built downtown or on the main USF campus,” Freeman wrote in an email. “The Florida Board of Governors has asked for a location to be decided before it approves legislative budget requests for next year at its January meeting, so the hope is to have a decision before that meeting.
“The land offer would be a gift by Mr. Vinik to the university and is contingent upon both the Morsani College of Medicine and USF Health Heart Institute being built there.”
USF will be requesting $62 million in state money over the next three years. Of that, $17 million will be requested for a new medical school in the upcoming session, plus $15.8 million for the heart institute, according to WUSF.
Vinik has assembled about 25 acres of land around Amalie Arena. His real estate team is working on a master plan for the area that would turn it into a “urban waterfront district.” The plans are a potentially billion-dollar deal, the Lightning have said, and are backed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ Cascade Investments.
